Guidelines for conducting postgraduate training programme at MCOMS
With the intention of standardising the training programme for postgraduates in various disciplines, and also keeping in view the curricula of Kathmandu University, the following guidelines are laid down.
Admission Procedure
i. Admission will be based on written entrance examination followed by counselling conducted by the Kathmandu University at Dhulikhel, Kavre.
ii. Selected candidates will deposit the necessary admission fees to Kathmandu University by due date and obtain the admission letter from the Dean, School of Medical Sciences, Kathmandu University, specifying the subject, preceptor and the institution.
iii. On arrival at MCOMS, the candidate will report to the Principal for his personal interview.
iv. Subsequently the candidate will meet Head Finance and deposit:
a. First instalment of tuition fees currently NPRs2,75,000/- (for Nepalese) and IRs2,75,000/- (for Indians) per year for clinical course including Pathology, but excluding Forensic Medicine, and NPRs1,75,000/- (for Nepalese) and IRs1,75,000/- (for Indians) per year for basic sciences excluding Pathology, but including Forensic Medicine.
b. Caution money of NPRs80,000/- refundable on qualifying the master's degree.
v. Scholarship/Bonded candidates will sign the necessary bond. They will also be required to deposit the caution money of NPRs80,000/- (refundable)
vi. All candidates will deposit their original certificates with Head Finance viz:
a. MBBS Degree
b. MBBS Mark Sheets (1st, 2nd, 3rd & Final MBBS)
c. 10th & 12th mark sheets and pass certificates
d. Permanent NMC registration certificate
e. Citizenship (Attested copy) for Nepali students
f. Copy of KU admission letter.
vii. After completing the above formalities with the finance department, the candidates will report to the Assistant Manager - Administration at Deep Campus for filling up necessary forms and completing the required formalities.
The following photocopies of certificates are required by the Administration Office (Deep Campus)
a. Copy of MBBS degree
b. MBBS Mark Sheets (1st, 2nd, 3rd & Final MBBS)
c. 10th and 12th mark sheets and pass certificates
d. Permanent NMC registration certificate
e. Citizenship certificate for Nepali students
f. 8 copies of passport size colour photographs
g. Receipt of payments of tuition fee and caution money made to finance department.
h. Original KU admission letter addressed to the Principal, MCOMS
Candidates will also fill up the following forms at Deep Campus Office
a. Admission Form for Post Graduate courses
b. Joining Report – in duplicate
c. Issue of Identity card – with 2 colour photographs
d. Library membership with one colour photograph
e. Medicare forms – with 2 colour photographs
viii. Candidates should be in possession of Doctor’s Coats along with Name Tab, and must use it all times in the Hospital / College.
ix. On completing above formalities, the candidates will be directed by Assistant Manager – Administration to report to the HOD of respective department.
Academic Programmes
i. After completing the admission formalities, all PG candidates will be addressed by Principal along with respective HODs and preceptors.
ii. Candidates will be interviewed by the HOD and then introduced to the preceptor.
iii. All departments will prepare 3 monthly training programme for the PGs as laid down by KU in respective curricula. One copy each of the same will be forwarded to Dean, Hospital Director and Post Graduate Academic Committee.
iv. Attempts will be made to periodically integrate teaching programme in different discipline where ever feasible.
v. Once a month – on last Thursday – a joint symposium will be presented by PGs of various disciplines. Post Graduate Academic Committee, in consultation with HOD's, will decide the important topics of common interest/clinical importance, and these will be duly circulated. For implementation of these programmes Director Academics (Clinical Sciences) will nominate the department for each symposium, who will appoint a facilitator to conduct the symposium and co-opt the PGs from various disciplines. The proceedings will be recorded on CDs and submitted to Post Graduate Academic Committee.
Monitoring
i. All PGs will maintain a log book as per the sample log book supplied by the Kathmandu University and enter daily teaching/learning activities.
ii. The log book should be initiated by a nominated faculty member every day, once a week by the preceptor and once a month by HOD.
Formative Continuous Assessment
i. Progress report is required to be sent to K.U. once a quarter which will be based on formative assessment conducted by the respective department (Preceptor and HOD).
ii. This report can be based as per curriculum. Departments may at their discretion hold practical tests/ clinical examination.
iii. All records of PG training must be available in department for inspection by KU, NMC and other regulatory agencies.
Thesis
i. Submission and approval of thesis by Kathmandu University is a mandatory requirement before the candidates can appear for MD/MS examination.
ii. Thesis subjects should be prospective, commensurate with the material available in Manipal Teaching Hospital and should preferably have some research element.
iii. Time Frame for Thesis
a. Selection of 3 topics with recommendation of one topic by preceptor to be submitted to Post Graduate Academic Committee within 3 months.
b. Clearance by Institutional Ethics Committee and submission to Post Graduate Subject Committee of KU for approval in 4th Month.
c. Once approved by above committee the Thesis work should be conducted, and completed by 24-28 months, for onward submission to Kathmandu University.
