FACILITIES AVAILABLE IN THE DEPT
1. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy equipment (Carl Storz)
2. Valli Lab Bipolar Diathermy
3. Cystoscope with cold light source
4. All equipments and instruments to carry out all general surgery, plastic and reconstructive urgery, neurosurgery, oncosurgery, endocrine surgery procedures.
SERVICES PROVIDED BY THE DEPT
Manipal Teaching Hospital is the only tertiary care centre at Pokhara. All complicated and serious cases are either admitted or transferred from other neighbouring hospitals. In a crisis like mass casualty situation all the casualties are brought to MTH. It provides state of art surgery in the following –
a) General Surgery
b) Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
c) Burns
d) Endocrine surgery
e) Neuro surgery
f) Onco surgery
g) Trauma surgery
The hospital has been recognized as the centre for treatment for cleft lip and cleft palate surgery by Smile Train Programme. It provides free surgery for cleft lip and cleft palate patients.
ROLE OF DEPARTMENT IN MCOMS /MTH COURSES
Students at MTH are prepared for MBBS course and MS General Surgery.
RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
Research on the following subject is being carried out-
a) Role of preoperative single dose and multi dose antibiotics in laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
b) Enteral feeding as an alternative to parenteral feeding in burn patients.
c) Comparison of CT findings and USG findings in blunt injury abdomen
d) Comparison of CT findings and operative findings in head injuries.
ACHIEVEMENTS
Dr (Mrs)M Baxi presented two papers on gastric cancer and benign breast disease and was awarded breast surgery international scholar award in July ‘08.
Dr J Baxi presented a paper on carotid body tumors and paraganglionomas at Royal College of Surgeons, Thailand in April’08.
FUTURE PLANS AND PROPOSED EXPANSIONS
1.At present there is only one fully functional burn centre in Nepal at Kathmandu. It is proposed to set up a burn centre at MTH. At present all burn cases are being admitted to general ward of MTH without the required manpower or equipment. A 10 bedded burn centre with all facilities and manpower is proposed.
2. Large number of Urology cases report to MTH. A Urology centre with a trained urologist is envisaged.
