Role of the Department 

  • Providing ENT health care services
  • Teaching undergraduate students for M.B.B.S. under Kathmandu University
  • Teaching post-graduate students for M.S. degree under Kathmandu University
  • Training of nurses for proficiency certificate level

O.P.D. Facilities 

  • 6 days per week (except Saturdays). Average monthly O.P.D. attendance: 1300 patients
  • O.P.D. timings: 08.30 to 13.00 hours; 14.15 to 16.30 hrs
  • Otomicroscopy, flexible laryngoscopy, flexible bronchoscopy, flexible oesophagoscopy,
  • caloric testing
  • Pure Tone Audiometry, Impedance Audiometry, Behavioral Observation Audiometry, Brain-stem Evoked Response Audiometry, Speech Therapy, Hearing Aid Trial & dispensing

 
In-Patient Facilities:

  • 25 bed ENT ward. Average monthly inpatients: 215

O.T. Facilities:

  • 4 days per week (Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday)
  • Average ENT surgeries per month: 35
  • Ear surgery: Tympanoplasty, Mastoidectomy, Stapedotomy, Myringotomy & grommet insertion
  • Nose surgery: Septo-turbinoplasty, Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery, Rhinoplasty, Reduction of maxillo-facial fracture
  • Throat surgery: Adenoidectomy, Tonsillectomy, Repair of palate injuries 
  • Head-Neck Surgery: Tracheostomy, Maxillectomy, Thyroidectomy, Superficial parotidectomy, Submandibular gland excision, Sistrunk’s operation, Branchial cyst & fistula excision
  • Endoscopy: Direct laryngoscopy, Microlaryngoscopy, Rigid oesophagoscopy &
  • Rigid bronchoscopy

Emergency Services:

• 24 hour emergency services are available
• One ENT consultant is on call per day by rotation with the post graduate trainee as back up
• Routine emergencies are ENT foreign bodies, epistaxis & stridor

Undergraduate Training:
MBBS students come to the ENT department in their 6th & 7th semesters.

Theory classes:

  • Duration: 1 year
  • No. of theory classes per batch in 1 year: 60 
  • No. of theory classes per week: 4 (2 for each semester) 
  • Duration of each class: 1 hour
  • Teaching Methods: Power Point presentation, Over Head Projector, Blackboard

Clinics:
• Each batch of 75 students is divided into 9-10 groups
• 2 groups of 8-10 students (1 from each semester) come for clinics.
• No. of students per group: 8-10
• Duration: 14 + 14 = 28 days in 2 semesters
• Timings: 10.00 to 13.00 hours (3 hrs per day)
• O.P.D. training = 3 days per week (Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays)
• O.T. training = 3 days per week (Sundays, Tuesdays & Thursdays)

Post-Graduate Training:
• Daily bedside clinical teaching
• Weekly seminar presentation by Post graduate trainee
• Weekly case presentation by Post graduate trainee
• Monthly journal article discussion by Post graduate trainee
