Indian Students


1. Is MCOMS recognised in India?


MCOMS is affiliated to the Kathmandu University and is recognised by the Nepal Medical Council as well as it is listed in the 7th Edition of the WHO Directory of Medical Schools. This recognition automatically allows a student graduating out of MCOMS to be eligible to practice in a particular country provided the student has passed the qualifying medical examination of  the concerned country e.g. USMLE, ACT XVI , MCI qualifying examination, PLAB UK etc.

The Medical Council of India stipulates that Currently Medical Council of India (MCI) regulations stipulates that all students studying MBBS programme from Medical Colleges outside India and wanting to practice in India after completion of their programme, need to appear for a "Screening Test".

2. May I get more information on screening test conducted by Medical Council of India?

Screening test is an examination conducted by Medical Council of India. It is an eligibility test conducted by Medical Council of India for registration of successful candidates who pass the screening test. The test consists of three papers of multiple choice questions in Pre-Clinical, Para-Clinical and Clinical Medicine and its allied subjects including Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

The screening test is conducted in English. The test duration for each paper will be of three hours. Students have to obtain 50% marks in each paper separately in order to pass the eligibility test.

The “Screening test” is conducted by the National Board of Education (NBE), New Delhi. This exam is conducted twice a year; on last Saturday / Sunday of September and on last Saturday / Sunday of March.

Once a student passes the “screening test” he/she needs to file their papers with the MCI, which will provide a Registration Number and one can now legally practice in India.

  1. A sincere student can pass the Screening Test in the 1st attempt. The Pass mark is 50%.
  2. The test is a QUALIFYING test similar to class 12. It is NOT an ELIMINATION test such as IIT, where only the top 2-3000 students get admission, irrespective of the marks. Here all that one has to do is to get 50% and one can pass the screening test.
  3. Students should NOT be worried of the screening test if they have studied in class.
  4. Study material & coaching is available for screening test if needed. MCOMS has also begun the practice of coaching students to enable them prepare for the screening test.

3. What are the eligibility criteria for getting admission for Indian Students?

To apply, a minimum of 50% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Biology with pass marks in English is required in the 10+2 or equivalent examination. Also, the candidate must have completed 17 years of age at the time of admissions

4. What is an eligibility certificate? How will I get eligibility certificate from Medical Council of India?

The Medical Council of India (MCI) has made it mandatory that all Indian students who are desirous of seeking admission in any foreign medical institution, shall be required to obtain an "Eligibility Certificate" from the MCI under the Eligibility Certificate Regulations 2002, before they are admitted in any foreign medical institution whether recognised under section 12 or under section 13 of the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956. This is mandatory should the student intend to return to India upon successful completion of his/her MBBS programme and commence medical practice in India.

There is a prescribed form to apply for eligibility certificate; form can be downloaded from MCI website:www.mciindia.org Students who applied for the eligibility certificate have obtained the same from the Medical Council of India. The request for issue of Eligibility Certificate shall be made by the candidate in the proforma prescribed by the Council and shall be accompanied by the original certificate/mark-sheet (along with Photostat copy) of the qualifying examination. The original certificate is returned to the candidate after verifying the same with the Photostat copy which is retained by the Council. The application is to be accompanied by a Demand Draft (Rs.1000/-) for the specified sum in favour of Secretary, Medical Council of India, New Delhi. The fee is fixed by MCI. 5. Who is eligible for an eligibility certificate?

Any Indian citizen who has attained the age of 17 years and has passed 10+2 Level from any recognised Council/Board of India or abroad. He/She must have studied Physics, Chemistry and Biology as elective subjects and obtained minimum 50% in aggregate of PCB combined. Also must have studies and passed English as a compulsory subject.

6. Am I eligible to practice medicine in India after completing my MBBS at MCOMS?

Yes! All graduates from MCOMS, like any foreign University medical graduate, will be eligible to practice medicine in India on clearing the screening test that is conducted by the National Board of Education (NBE)

7. Is there special coaching given to the students at MCOMS for the MCI screening test?

Yes! At MCOMS students are trained for various international medical licensure exams like the USMLE (USA) and PLAB (UK), including the MCI screening test.

8. Can I get a job in a Government Hospital or allied medical institutions in India?

Yes, after clearing the screening test & getting your registration with the State or Central Medical Council you are eligible for any government appointment. In order to work as a medical practitioner you have to appear for MCI's screening test. Upon clearing the screening test you are eligible for registration as a doctor and allowed to practice on par with all other doctors

9. Is there any arrangement for Indian food at MCOMS?

Yes, the mess in the campus provides a variety of Indo-Nepali vegetarian / non-vegetarian food.

10. Where is MCOMS situated? How do I reach Nepal from India?

Nepal is very well connected. Kathmandu is the entry point while flying in. For students from other countries, Kathmandu is well connected by air while for Indian students flights are available from Delhi and Kolkata.

MCOMS is located in Pokhara, a beautiful valley town 200km west of Kathmandu. The beauty of Pokhara is enhanced by its lovely lakes, rivers and spectacular view of the Annapurna range with Dhaulagiri, Himachuli and Machhapuchhre peaks. You can travel to Pokhara from Kathmandu by air or by road. For students from other countries, Kathmandu is well connected by air while for Indian students flights are available from Delhi and Kolkata. 1. Is MCOMS recognised worldwide?

Manipal College of Medical Sciences (MCOMS) is a part of Manipal Education, one of the largest education service providers in India. MCOMS is the first of its kind professional medical college in Nepal which was set up under the historic agreement between the government of Nepal and Manipal Education and Medical Group (MEMG). MCOMS is affiliated to Kathmandu University. It is recognised by the Medical Councils of Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Mauritius It is listed in the 7th Edition of the WHO Directory of Accredited Medical Schools as well as the Directory of Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) which conducts the United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE). It is recognised by the British Columbia Student Assistant Programme (BCSAP), Canada.

2. Are MCOMS students eligible to practice in other countries?

MCOMS is affiliated to Kathmandu University and is recognised by the Nepal Medical Council. The college is listed in the 7th edition of the WHO directory of medical schools and the International Medical Education Directory. These recognitions enable students graduating out of MCOMS to be eligible to appear for licensing examinations from different countries such as MCI qualifying examination, PLAB-UK, USMLE, ACT XVII, Australian Medical Board Examination etc.
